How do you spell ironic?? Robert Greenwald needs to ask SF Mayor Gavin Newsom, who’s hosting this gala event, why he’s supporting Home Depot, the largest American retailer after Wal-Mart, and a corporation who utilizes most of the same employment and predatory business practices that WM does. Gavin Newsom, in San Francisco of all places, is supporting the Home Depot corporation in trying to locate a store adjacent to a neighborhood that doesn’t want it with the promise of jobs for the nearby African-American community. Why has Newsom chosen to pretend he believes HD’s false promise of “jobs,” when communities all over the country understand this tactic is a smokescreen? The San Francisco supervisors vote on this issue TUESDAY, the day before this premiere. Newsom needs to either back away from hosting Home Depot in his town or back away from hosting this event.

while Gavin's position towards Wal-Mart is confused. How can Gavin take a PRO Home Depot stance in San Francisco and at the same time take an ANTI WalMart position? Especially, when his position is that Home Depot will provide economic benefits to the African-American community here in San Francisco. Home Depot is just another BigBox retailer out to suck as much money out of the community as possible and ship it over to Atlanta GA where they can fund further expansion and growth along with a Republican agenda (90% of their donations supported the right our republican party in 2004).

please don't consider this a defense of home depot, but there *is* a big difference between walmart and all big box stores in general. yes, they all have sprawl issues and small business issues, etc. but there's something uniquely special about walmart's evil that could make it logically consistent for a person to support say best buy or costco, and not walmart.

Here in San Francisco, Home Depot has positioned itself as the savior of the disadvantaged - a common Wal-Mart tactic. How can Mayor Newsom see that Wal-Mart is not the answer, but fail to see that Home Depot can be just as detrimental to the fabric and economy of our city and neighborhoods. Already Home Depot has deepened a rift between neighborhoods in SF.

Perhaps with some urging from Robert Greenwald, the mayor will see the parallels between the #1 and #2 retailers, and will encourage the Supervisors to REJECT Home Depot on Tuesday, which is what they are clearly ready to do. (There may be some Big Box chains that are not as predatory in nature, but Home Depot 's history shows it to be one of the worst.)

If Mayor Newsom continues to support a Home Depot in SF, then he (and San Francsico) cannot continue to be a shining example of a city that survives and thrives without Big Box.

Home Depot thrives by killing off local business, just like Walmart.

Home Depot is vehemently anti-union, just like Walmart.

Home Depot doesn't pay for health benefits for millions of its part time employees, just like Walmart.

Home Depot has had a long history of employment discrimination problems (worse than Walmart?)

Home Depot is just Walmart with orange aprons.

Mayor Newsom is trying to bring Home Depot into San Francisco. If he is the one to stand up in front of this otherwise wonderful and worthy event, you should make him wear his orange apron.

Yes, it is the height of irony that Mayor Newsom is introducing your movie about the evils of Wal-Mart, while working to get Home Depot in San Francisco. Please tell him that Home Depot is only better than Wal-Mart by the smallest of degrees, if that. And if he is opposed to the Wal-Mart style of retailing, he MUST be consistent and oppose any effort by Home Depot to build in this city. Thanks and good luck with your movie. It sounds great.

Ok, Newsom is a foxy politician...1) He already knows that the board will approve the EIR this Tuesday ; 2) So, to thanks the Peskin and Duffy, for their cooperation in bringing HD and $500,000 in sale taxes to SF, the next day, he takes a stand against Wal-Mart. It doesn't cost him pennies, because Wal-Mart will never apply for a permit in SF, but on the same time, he sends a message to HD: you better deliver what you promised to the community, because here is what I ( and all the board members) think about you guys business practices ! We watched the movie AND we will watch you .
