Maybe its time to take a different approach, and create a word that can be used to define right media, from right wing media. A word that can be used in an expression to demoralize those who hide behind lies.
Since Robert is responsible, I think it should be called Greenwalled Media Group.
Those politicians that are caught in a lie, or being corrupt can be told "You've just been Greenwalled" I can see the bumper stickers and t-shirts already. :)

I'm so happy you are doing this. I was so impressed with Outfoxed and have shared it with many.
I know how important it is that our voices be heard clearly in the media, and my group, Naples Democracy for America is working on ideas to be heard in our local media.
I've also tried to launch a grassroots effort to create a video documentary off the ground, but haven't had a lot of success.
I have started gathering video whenever I get a chance to use in the documentary. So far I have Howard Dean and the other candidates at the DNC Chair Committee Meeting in Orlando, and George McGovern speaking at a booksigning.
I would love to do more so if there is anything I can do to help, please count me in.

I think you should look into having a federation of independent film activists to do the work that one simply is unable to. This can ensure the sharing of films for showings in various regions and help other independent film companies see a spring in work. Especially work they feel passionately about. I think an appropriate name is the Federation for Media Literacy or something like that. I could see the literacy part over reaching the intended goal of your project, but I think strengthening your ties with other independent film activists around the country would be very useful.

Well, personally i think you should steer well clear of any name where you're associating yourself with the TRUTH. Truth has many forms, and as anyone with a bit od sense will tell you your truth is different from mine, and someone else's.
It's a lso a good way to set yourself up for a fall when something you do in good faith, turns out to be inaccurate. And like it or not, sometime, somewhere, it's a possible event.
Try calling yourself Truth Media Inc or whatever after that, it's an easy way for your enemies to sneer at you.
The things you guys seem, to me, to be about, I think its fair to say, is inquiry and investigation and revealing what you find. Not without an agenda, of course, but then everyone here talking about truth and rightness and "reality" knows that, yeah?

Outfoxed and Uncovered are about REVEALING unknown information that is persuasive. The films don't want to "speak Truth". "Truth" is a term that asks the public to side with or against your company from the get-go. You'd rather bring everyone in with more inclusive and nationalist sounding names, and get them to see the films).
To claim the arena of truth one must not point to the question of whether it is truth. Claiming the arena of truth is done by placing the assumption that you speak truth within the structure of what you present. Naming "truth" makes the assumption visible and questionable. Example: What part of "Project for the New American Century" do you want to say is bad? Pick a word... You can't, because they know how to name themselves. We must be at least as smart in picking a name for the company that forwards our countering viewpoint. --Nessim

I'm going to second someone else's suggestion: Watchdog Productions or Watchdog Media. I think its great for a number of reasons. First, media are supposed to be the watchdogs, right? But they've failed, so We Need A Real Watchdog. Also the word 'watch' evokes the whole watching-the-watchers (eg 'watching' mainstream media) thing. And 'dog', with its loyal, guardian connotations contrasts to 'fox' with its sneaky, theiving connotations. Plus the logo potential is good. That's my 2 cents. (I'm assuming either name is available, of course.)

I would call the company Courant Media after the New-England Courant, a newspaper founded by James Franklin, Benajman Franklin's older brother, circa 1721 in Boston.
The paper was created to take on the Purtian establishment of Boston in a pointed and irreverant way. I like the idea of reminding people that the U.S. was founded as the result of a revolution against an established order by people who felt a free press was essential to healthy democracy.
This was brought to mind by Paul Starr's excellent book "The Creation of the Media: Political Origins of Modern Communications" which explains just how important a free press was considered to be in early America.

Since you're looking for the name for a new media company, why not call it The New Media Company or New Media Productions? Another thought is New Day Productions.
I really don't like the idea of demonizing Republicans or tying this company to Fox News or Murdoch or anyone else. I'd rather see a positive focus. We are looking toward a new day in our country--a new focus on what freedom and democracy mean, increased participation of the public--be they conservative or liberal or any other stripe or color--in the governing of our country, more thoughtful consideration of how we interact with and impact the global community. So I vote for incorporating this forward thinking in the name of the company.

Hounds hunt foxes (though it's not a direct attack), they're watchful guardians, they're friendly, they're LOUD, and people can relate to hounds. Someone has already suggested Common Sense Productions (or Common Sense Media would do). I do think this gets right to the point, references Thomas Paine well, and sounds serious enough not to be perceived as too clever, juvenile or vindictive. At the same time, if anyone who has no idea who Paine was comes across it, it would also imply that if everyone used their common sense and looked below the surface of the slew of right-wing crap, we wouldn't be in the fix we're in now.
Runner-up: Outfoxed Productions, for, as someone said above, the name-recognition factor.

(though I have to say, I do like the idea of "Greenwalled Productions" for the reasons stated, I'm shy about the thought of a revolution or uprising being tied primarily to the personality of one person. That's the reason for not jumping behind one candidate (esp. of the two parties offered -- which have really become ONE party) in this UNdemocratic, exclusionary system, or suggesting that any one person could be (or even should be) the backbone of any movement. In the long run, it undermines the power that will lead any successful change.

I think it's a propos here because what we're dealing with is a reversal of all the progress the unionists gave their lifesblood for. We find ourselves back in a robber baron plutocracy. Hello Robert,
Thank you for all that you have done to show people truth and honesty CAN exist in the media - you just need to look in more than one direction (the right) to find it.
How about TIM productions, standing for Truth In Media?
Keep doing what you do - we NEED people like you everywhere.
We Americans have more in common than we have differences. The red and blue maps show a divide that is, in reality, a difference of a few percentile. When you break those maps down to the precinct level most of the country is a shade of purple. Victory is in the middle. Ignore the 10% on the extreme left and the 10% on the extreme right and you have 80% of the country that is within a few thoughts and ideas of seeing the same vision for America. I think maybe a progressive is just a conservative trying not to vote like his father! The danger in America isn't the red Americans, it's Karl Roves' political machine. That should be the mission. We should define it and not loose sight of it. My name is Purple Medium. Purple to reflect how much we have in common not our differences. Medium is a double-entendre that shows a multi-media company and also reinforces that we are all closer to the middle than we are left or right. But having said that...if you have to explain it, it's the wrong name!

I have always been impressed by names that make unbelievable acronyms. My favorite of all time is 'CREEP' -- the Committee to RE-Elect the President. Worthy of the best of 'Wag The Dog' and some media genius actually came up with this and sold the Republicans on it -- you should do the same.
My first thought is "Friends United to Challenge Know-nothings and Educate Dolts..."
But I'll continue working on others...

Someone has already suggested using the words 'Grass Roots' in the name. I think this would really represent what this movement is all about. The name should be broad enough to cover all issues and not be limited to single issues (ie anti-Republicans, anti-Fox, anti-Murdoch, etc). It should represent the source of the movement's strength ... the grassroots.
How about: GrassRoots Media, GrassRoots News, GrassRoots Productions .. or .. along a different line ... FreshAir Productions .. or .. OpenMind Media

We formed Skye Pictures, Inc. after drinking drambuie, made on the Isle of Skye. The answer may be right in front of you.
Second, there's a long standing left newspaper called The Fifth Estate, run by Peter and Marilyn Weirbe in Detroit. I don't know if there is a Fifth Estate Media company or not.
Also, your other suggestions focus on truth, environment, reality and shining the light down the rat holes. How about considering something that focuses on the future, as you are not only concerned with counterpoints for the present, but for the coming generations? There probably is a Counterpoint Media, but maybe something on that idea, but without negative or defensive tone - Futurepoint Media? Propoint Media? Have fun!

There's a simple way to solve the name problem. In German, "Wald" means "Forest". The name Greenwald is probably a minor anglicization of the German word "gruenwald", which means "green forest". For this reason, I recommend "Green Forest" or "Green Forest Productions".

Unless your 'mission statement' is to be purely a propagandist of the left, I'm a strong believer in there being at least two sides to every issue.
For your organization I would stay away from anything that only smacks of liberalism -- progressive -- the left...etc.
Believing that any body can be wrong, misguided, or inaccurate, (or worse) whichever side they're on -- I think it would be great if you would really be 'fair and balanced' -- and take on the 'left' when it's wrong too, so you don't get pigeonholed like Michael Moore has...
Having been on the debating team at school -- I always liked taking 'the other side'...it would be nice if any side could come here and look for some reason...not just 'right' bashing...I'd like to see a 'neutral bias'...
Hence, the name:

Regarding a name for your new company, how about:
Prometheus Media
or some variation on the Prometheus theme? Since Prometheus (whose name, incidentally, means "forethought") was the one who stole fire from the gods and used it to enlighten mankind and led them to become inventive, productive and prosperous, I think it's particularly relevant to what you're doing. In addition, Prometheus (as the legend goes) was the one who held mortals ("the common man", as it were) in higher esteem than Zeus and the rest of the gods in power (I think you can see the reference here...). As such, he taught man all sorts of things that were not only necessary for survival but led to the development of art, literature and culture: numbers; the alphabet (in order that they remember their history); ships; navigating by the stars; agriculture ... it's a long list, and I think you can see how it connects - he gave mortals the ability to care for themselves and not be subject to the wills of the Olympian gods.
As I said, I think it's particularly apropos.
Oh, and by the way: I loved "Outfoxed".

I'd suggest "The Freedom Network"--take the title before the Repubs bastardize it and stain it themselves--steal their thunder for a change--"pre-empt' their propaganda. Be a little brazen and/or inspiring ourselves; they shouldn't corner the market on this. They hide all their bullshit under lofty rhetoric that often flows more from our ideals than theirs--let's not let them steal the words from us anymore. And who knows, maybe one of the dittoheads might blunder upon the company because of it and hopefully learn a thing or two before they realize this ain't their daddy's Rush.

I agree with LJ when s/he says "we (you) need to get the attention, and eventually, the respect and approval of the other guys. You have ours already so you need an "open" name that does not alienate others."
I'm a professional mediator and couldn't agree more. If we use "Truth" in the name, we are calling people liars (and they'll quit listening). If we call ourselves "Progressive," people will tune out before they find out what we stand for. If we focus only on responding to the negative, we'll sound like whiners.
I believe (like a previous commentator) that we need to focus on the 80% whom we might be able to actually reach with positive, progressive ideas (to encourage the convinced and be listened to by the others)--IF we're also willing to do some listening.
Let's try something like "Dialog for Democracy Productions" or "One Nation Productions."
(Excuse me for the "we"--even though I'm one of the convinced, I know that you'll be doing all the work for the production company!).

Okay...I just couldn't stop myself from submitting a couple or three more suggestions. Just got a chance to actually read everyone's suggestions and truly, Robert...there are superb ideas herein for you to pluck from! Love the thought of using a name with strength, such as the "G.R.I.T." thought -- ooh! ...and how 'bout Grist Mill Films? (it is especially important for the name to evoke a certain toughness (while still being irreverant)... since Dems are suffering from a real need to re-introduce/demonstrate to our youthful and ignorant brethren , our masculine (patriarchal), "provider/protector" philosophies and policies... because the media machines on the Right have impressively brainwashed even some of our own over the last 30 or so years into believing that WE are the weak ones! Let's face that fact full-on and punch, punch, PUNCH right back at them -- particularly when we find ourselves up against the ropes -- to put it into boxing terms !). (that advisement comes straight from Dr. Howard Dean).

Let us lead their constituents to the water via your new company's compelling name and perhaps they will drink? Nevermind the appeal of the name to people like me (you had us at "hello," ya know?)! hahaha

"Rise and Shine" was suggested by someone near the beginning of the comments and I second it. It's positive, implies a fresh outlook, a new day dawning. Many suggestions have been based on twisting conservative mottos or titles. I think this is shortsighted and potentially limiting. Granted, you may be particularly motivated right now due to the outrages perpetrated by the Bush Admin or rightwing extremists, but in the future you may also be shedding light on areas of concern that are not based on critical assessment of what others are doing. You may be identifying areas of concern that that no one is particularly aware of. Best of luck.

(Although Outfoxed was an absolutely spot-on title for your important documentary.)
Over the past 10 years, the right wing has successfully given "liberal" a negative connotation, while "conservative" has enjoyed a more positive connotation. So how about a name to acknowledge the company's left-leaning by accepting and embracing the "liberal" label to give the word a more positive connotation. Some ideas...
"Accountable Liberal" "Responsible Liberal" "Compassionate Liberal" or, to go for broke "Jesus Was Liberal, Too" (that one might be too far, but it would generate attention, plus there is a considerable biblical basis for it! :)

I both loved and hated "Outfoxed." It was wonderfully done, but I hated watching all that realilty in one go. I'm also sorry you had to even deal with the bastards in such a thoughtful way. I wish we could have simply called in an air-strike on FOX. Talking about clearing the air!

I think George Lakoff is on to it when he challenges progressives to change our language and in-turn change the long term debate.
1) Ask him directly what you should call it. 2) Stealing four words out of his "ten word" philosophy here are two suggestions;
a) Better Future Media, b) Media for Mutual Responsibility
...and here's one more swiped from a Lakoff book... How about c) Open Communications. But you can't use it because I like it too much and I will start my own media company with that name...

You might consider the name, "Running Water" for the new organization.
* It is an "Action Name". Most people relate to "Run" as in responding to a need quickly and decisively. Water is a universal need like many of the items/issues that are the focus of your energies.
* Water itself is coming to the fore as a major issue re: global engineering companies such as Bectal seek to convert water to a controlled enterprise.
* Running Water has a historic connotation that will be recognized by many. In the Bible, Book of John, there is a parable called the Woman by the Well. The history preceding that interaction speaks to us today. Briefly, this period in the history of the Jewish people began about 732 BC with the fall of Samaria/Israel. In 587 BC, Judah fell. Other major events occurred. Subsequent history found the Samarian Jews in the North and those of Judah in the South. They were bitterly divided. This history is instructive to those who would better understand the dynamics of the Red Sates/Blue States division we are experiencing in this country.
You efforts may significantly skew history over the next one to two decades if you are successful. The key is not bombastic rhetoric in the sense that "we hold the truth, dummies", but rather it is removing the pollution of ignorance and greed from our national Running Water, that Spirit of Our Nation, Our Nation of the People, by the People, and for the Greater Good of All Our People.

I'm so happy you are doing this. I was so impressed with Outfoxed and have shared it with many.
I know how important it is that our voices be heard clearly in the media, and my group, Naples Democracy for America is working on ideas to be heard in our local media.
I've also tried to launch a grassroots effort to create a video documentary off the ground, but haven't had a lot of success.
I have started gathering video whenever I get a chance to use in the documentary. So far I have Howard Dean and the other candidates at the DNC Chair Committee Meeting in Orlando, and George McGovern speaking at a booksigning.
I would love to do more so if there is anything I can do to help, please count me in.

Outfoxed and Uncovered are about REVEALING unknown information that is persuasive. The films don't want to "speak Truth". "Truth" is a term that asks the public to side with or against your company from the get-go. You'd rather bring everyone in with more inclusive and nationalist sounding names, and get them to see the films).
To claim the arena of truth one must not point to the question of whether it is truth. Claiming the arena of truth is done by placing the assumption that you speak truth within the structure of what you present. Naming "truth" makes the assumption visible and questionable. Example: What part of "Project for the New American Century" do you want to say is bad? Pick a word... You can't, because they know how to name themselves. We must be at least as smart in picking a name for the company that forwards our countering viewpoint. --Nessim

The paper was created to take on the Purtian establishment of Boston in a pointed and irreverant way. I like the idea of reminding people that the U.S. was founded as the result of a revolution against an established order by people who felt a free press was essential to healthy democracy.
This was brought to mind by Paul Starr's excellent book "The Creation of the Media: Political Origins of Modern Communications" which explains just how important a free press was considered to be in early America.

For a name, I thought of "Truth to Power", but somebody got to it before me! The crying need these days for speaking the truth has been highlighted by many above, and the word truth appears in so many names already suggested. So, since the progressive challenge these days is about getting the voice of truth to be heard above the falsifying din of corporate media, how about, simply, Voice of Truth Media (VTM), or Power of Truth Media (PTM)?
A couple fox hunting terms that might fit the bill:
HITTING THE LINE (To hit the line is what a hound does when it finds the scent)
IN BLOOD (Though the term is most often used in today's vernacular to suggest that what is written is indisputably true, in the world of fox hunting, hounds are 'in blood' when they have been killing foxes regularly)

(though I have to say, I do like the idea of "Greenwalled Productions" for the reasons stated, I'm shy about the thought of a revolution or uprising being tied primarily to the personality of one person. That's the reason for not jumping behind one candidate (esp. of the two parties offered -- which have really become ONE party) in this UNdemocratic, exclusionary system, or suggesting that any one person could be (or even should be) the backbone of any movement. I first thought of this as a series of online video shorts of a "virtual" candidate answering news conference questions in a candid and truthful manner from a progressive perspective, thereby escaping the constipated rhetoric of the two party duopoly we are force fed in the media. I believe spoken truth rings clear, bypassing the confused regions of the mind to find a kinship in the truer self, as does art. I 'd be proud to have your project wearing the name.

How about considering something that focuses on the future, as you are not only concerned with counterpoints for the present, but for the coming generations? or some variation on the Prometheus theme? Since Prometheus (whose name, incidentally, means "forethought") was the one who stole fire from the gods and used it to enlighten mankind and led them to become inventive, productive and prosperous, I think it's particularly relevant to what you're doing. In addition, Prometheus (as the legend goes) was the one who held mortals ("the common man", as it were) in higher esteem than Zeus and the rest of the gods in power (I think you can see the reference here...). As such, he taught man all sorts of things that were not only necessary for survival but led to the development of art, literature and culture: numbers; the alphabet (in order that they remember their history); ships; navigating by the stars; agriculture ... it's a long list, and I think you can see how it connects - he gave mortals the ability to care for themselves and not be subject to the wills of the Olympian gods.
As I said, I think it's particularly apropos.

I'm a professional mediator and couldn't
agree more. If we use "Truth" in the name, we are calling people liars (and they'll quit listening). If we call ourselves "Progressive," people will tune out before they find out what we stand for. If we focus only on responding to the negative, we'll sound like whiners.
I believe (like a previous commentator) that we need to focus on the 80% whom we might be able to actually reach with positive, progressive ideas (to encourage the convinced and be listened to by the others)--IF we're also willing to do some listening.
Let's try something like "Dialog for Democracy Productions" or "One Nation Productions."
(Excuse me for the "we"--even though I'm one of the convinced, I know that you'll be doing all the work for the production company!).

These politicians have a huge impact on, for example, environmental policies. Being that they believe the world will end soon and that only the "Left Behind" people (largely the secularists, I imagine) are to remain, these hardballers couldn't care less about preserving the Rain Forest or the Arctic Wildlife Preserve... or give a rat's ass about increased pollutants in our waters and air. Let us lead their constituents to the water via your new company's compelling name and perhaps they will drink? Nevermind the appeal of the name to people like me (you had us at "hello," ya know?)! hahaha

If you want to give your organization instant armor against the attacks of the right wing, why not name it something outlandishly conservative? Nuns for Truth, or Red Blooded Americans for a Military Theocracy, perhaps. What about Republicans for the American Way? You can think of better examples than me, the point is just join in the disinformation with the best of them. I'm kind of joking, but it would be funny to watch Senator Frist attack Republicans for the American Way.

* It is an "Action Name". Most people relate to "Run" as in responding to a need quickly and decisively. Water is a universal need like many of the items/issues that are the focus of your energies.
* Water itself is coming to the fore as a major issue re: global engineering companies such as Bectal seek to convert water to a controlled enterprise.
* Running Water has a historic connotation that will be recognized by many. In the Bible, Book of John, there is a parable called the Woman by the Well. The history preceding that interaction speaks to us today. Briefly, this period in the history of the Jewish people began about 732 BC with the fall of Samaria/Israel. In 587 BC, Judah fell. Other major events occurred. Subsequent history found the Samarian Jews in the North and those of Judah in the South. They were bitterly divided. This history is instructive to those who would better understand the dynamics of the Red Sates/Blue States division we are experiencing in this country.
You efforts may significantly skew history over the next one to two decades if you are successful. The key is not bombastic rhetoric in the sense that "we hold the truth, dummies", but rather it is removing the pollution of ignorance and greed from our national Running Water, that Spirit of Our Nation, Our Nation of the People, by the People, and for the Greater Good of All Our People.
